What's New in Midnight PvP

Let’s start with the fun stuff and talk about the new things that Midnight brought to PvP, all while trying to avoid awkwardly mentioning the addons that are now useless.

Midnight’s biggest PvP additions are still around in Season 2, including Training Grounds and the 40v40 Slayer’s Rise battleground. Patch 12.1 also expands Training Grounds with Arena matches, giving players another way to practice PvP before jumping into rated content. So, let’s go through the main PvP features available in Midnight Season 2.

Training Grounds

For those looking to get into instanced player vs player activities, you can now actually learn how things work by visiting the Training Grounds mode. In this mode, you’ll join a team of players and will play one of 3 battlegrounds against a team of AI bots. Which means, you’ll be able to learn how each BG works and what you need to do without risking letting your team down in a real BG against other players. Training Grounds mode is available from the PvP Group Finder, and you can either choose a random BG or a specific one:

  • The Battle for Gilneas
  • Silvershard Mines
  • Arathi Basin

There’s no reason to join those before reaching the max level 90, because you would be wasting a lot of time trying to queue. But as soon as you hit level 90, you’ll be able to pick up a quest called Early Morning Training which is the first part of a four-week PvP quest chain. Early Morning Training gives Novice Combatant's Medallion, while the Hero-track ring or necklace comes at the end of the chain.

Patch 12.1 expands this system with Training Grounds: Arenas. The new Arena version becomes available during the Season 2 pre-season in the week of August 11, letting players practice Arena combat against AI-controlled opponents before rated PvP Season 2 begins. This makes Training Grounds useful for learning both battleground objectives and small-scale Arena combat without putting your rating at risk.

Slayer’s Rise

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new large-scale, 40vs40 battleground, and Slayer’s Rise, located in the Voidstorm, is just that. Designed in the same style as Alterac Valley and Isle of Conquest, this map includes several main and optional objectives.

Each team spawns on the opposite side of the map in Hate Spire or Grief Spire, respectively. Other points of interest serve as additional map objectives. For example, Shenzar Refinery is a point that can be captured to activate the weapons of war that will damage the home base of the enemy team.

The objective is to push the lane and destroy key NPCs on the way to the enemy base. The Take Flight buff that you can get from various black holes around the zone will help you get around the map faster. The map also features neutral NPC camps like Wardens of Grief, which, when captured, will help you defend and push the lane.

Slayer’s Rise objectives:

  • Attack and defeat NPC’s at Bastion of Might or Bastion of Valor.
  • Defend Stareater Pavilion and Shadow Ridge Outpost from being destroyed.
  • (Optional) Hire Griefspine Ultradon or Kronus to help with the attack
  • Defeat the Domanaar leader: Vidious <Domanaar of Grief> or Ziadan <Domanaar of Hate>.

The map itself isn’t empty either; it will host weekly PvP events, its own faction called Slayer’s Duellum, and rewards tied to its reputation.

Midnight PvP Currency and Schedule

Honor, Conquest, and Bloody Tokens remain the main currencies tied to PvP gearing in Midnight. Honor is primarily used for Honor gear, Conquest is tied to stronger seasonal PvP equipment, while Bloody Tokens come from War Mode activities.

Midnight Season 2 has a short pre-season period before rated PvP officially begins:

Starting August 11 - Season 2 Pre-Season

  • Training Grounds: Arenas becomes available.
  • Rated PvP Season 2 has not started yet.
  • Other Patch 12.1 Season 2 activities begin unlocking during this week.

Starting August 18 - PvP Season 2

  • Midnight PvP Season 2 officially begins.
  • Season 2 rated PvP progression becomes available.
  • New Season 2 PvP gear and seasonal rewards become obtainable.
  • Players can start working toward the new Venomous PvP achievements, titles, mounts, and other rating rewards.

For EU players, Midnight PvP Season 2 begins with the weekly reset on August 19.

Midnight PvP Rewards and Gear

This is the most exciting part and the only thing that is actually new besides the added BG map and the Training Grounds. Midnight Season 2 introduces a new set of Venomous PvP gear, along with new seasonal mounts, titles, cosmetics, and rated PvP rewards. PvP gear continues to scale to a higher item level in Arenas, Battlegrounds, and other PvP content, so its PvP item level is more important than its base PvE item level.

PvP Gear and Vendors

You can find your PvP gear vendors in Silvermoon City, Falconwing Square:

Each type of PvP gear offers a different ilvl:

Gear Type Season 2 PvP Item Level
Crafted - Venomous Combatant's Heraldry 318
War Mode - Venomous Warmonger 331
Honor - Venomous Aspirant 331
Crafted - Venomous Aspirant's Heraldry 331
Conquest - Venomous Gladiator 344
Crafted - Venomous Gladiator's Heraldry 344

As you can see, PvP gearing is a valid way to get the current highest ilvl in the game, so PvP fans will not be missing out on character progression by not doing any PvE activities.

Crafted PvP gear has three different scaling levels depending on the Heraldry used. Venomous Combatant's Heraldry scales crafted equipment to 318, Venomous Aspirant's Heraldry increases it to 331, and Venomous Gladiator's Heraldry raises it to 344.

Keep in mind that these are PvP item levels. The gear has a lower base item level outside PvP, but automatically scales up while you're fighting in PvP content. Because of this, you should compare PvP gear by its PvP item level rather than treating 331 or 344 as its regular PvE item level.

Season 2 PvP Mounts

Midnight Season 2 has two exclusive PvP mounts tied to Rated PvP achievements:

You can earn the Vicious Lightbloom Boar by winning Rated PvP matches during Midnight Season 2 while at 1000 rating or higher. The mount comes in separate Alliance and Horde versions with faction-colored armor.

The Venomous Gladiator's Goredrake is the more prestigious Season 2 PvP mount. To get it, you need to complete Gladiator: Midnight Season 2 by winning 50 3v3 Arena matches while at Elite rank.
